This event is co-located as part of the Associations Congress UK in Manchester. The forum is exclusively for Executive Directors, Heads of Associations, and Strategic Directors, and address key strategic issues of developing associations, their value to members, improving engagement with members, sustainable revenue streams, and governance, concluding with a drinks reception.

Facilitator: Michael Anderson, CAE, Past President & CEO of the Canadian Society of Association Executives from 1999 to 2017. Fellow of the American Society of Association Executives and the Australasian Society of Association Executives.

13:00 Introduction & overview
Michael will give a brief overview of his experience, describe how the day will flow and then provide an opportunity for participants to list the issues they’d like to discuss as a group at the end of the day and those notes will go on an easel referred to as the “parking lot”. Overview of issues to be covered during the Leaders Forum: Michael will reinforce that the Chatham House rule applies. He’ll then provide an overview of the four issues that will be dealt with during the first and second part of the day.

The proposed issues are:
  • Improve Board governance and ensure your Board Chair and Board members embrace their roles and responsibilities.
  • Conduct effective horizon/environmental scanning and use that information effectively.
  • Recruit, train and build exceptional staff teams.
  • Change your business model to deliver stronger value to members and new segments.
13:30 Issue Division
Participants are equally grouped at four tables.The first and second tables address issue one and the third and fourth tables address issue two. Each table must have a facilitator to keep the discussion focused, a scribe who will record their conclusions on an easel stand and a reporter who then provides the perspectives, suggestions and conclusions of the group. Michael will move from table to table and listen to the discussion, provide direction and advice as required.

Michael facilitates a group discussion based on the “parking lot” easel issues. He’ll speak with participants during the day to encourage them to list their areas and will come prepared with a number to get the discussion going.
